General Profile
Pulaski County, established in 1843, is located south of Johnson and Union County , west of Alexander County and east of Massac County. The Ohio River borders it on the south. The Cache River and Mill Creek form the western border between Alexander and Pulaski counties. Pulaski county at 201 square miles has the smallest land area of the southernmost five counties. The county's population is 7,348. Mound City is the county seat. Historically the economy in Pulaski County is depressed with a high unemployment rate that often has been twice the state average. It's agricultural sector represents 10% of the county's employment. The region's largest employer is the public sector as monies have been allocated to the county as a means of countering the lack of private investment. The Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge, located in the lower Cache Basin, has converted an extensive amount of the land area to conservation purposes. The entire county is included in the Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone. The climate is continental, typical of southern Illinois , with an annual temperature range of about 100 degrees. Maximum summer temperatures may reach 100'F and winter minimums can be zero or below. There are frequent changes in temperature, humidity and wind. Annual precipitation averages about 45 inches and is about evenly distributed throughout the year. There is a large variety of outdoor recreation in the county; hiking, bicycling, hunting, fishing and canoeing and bird watching. Pulaski County has recently restored its early 20th century courthouse and Mound City is home to a National Cemetery. The area is rich in Civil War history. [ Top of Page ]
